John Mackey...

...is a stark contradiction to the idea that being a libertarian and being a left-wing hippy are incompatible. Using right-wing economics and left-wing politics, the founder of Whole Foods has created a business juggernaut. Read more in the Fast Company article The Anarchist's Cookbook.

One way that libertarian ideals can co-exist with leftist ones is to restrict the former to determining what we should be forced to / allowed to do, and the latter to guide what we choose to do. Don't force employers to profit share or donate to charity - but do both in your business, because you believe it to be right. Don't legislate a health care requirement - but provide coverage to your employees. Makes perfect sense to me.

John Mackey is one of my heroes. He's f-in' amazing. I think that he and I are very similar in our ideals. Don't force anyone to do anything, but do the right thing. :)

I've always thought that a national health care scheme would actually tend to have people create more independent businesses. I'd be uncomfortable living life without that safety net, but in all other aspects being self employed has a lot going for it.

But you've just put forward a very good synopsis of what the libertarians who don't annoy me believe.

Health care
Insurance isn't that expensive if you buy actual insurance instead of whatever it is most people buy.

If your deductible is less than $1000 or so, and you don't pay out of pocket for routine visits to the doctor, you don't have insurance, you have a complicated billing management scheme.

I pay $42 a month for health insurance that has a $1000 deductible, covers only hospital related costs, and has a $3500/year max out of pocket cap. Most people pay more for cable TV than that.

This kinda reminds me of Robert Owen, only hopefully more consistent in his vision.

Your grandfather might disagree with you.

That would be nothing new!

But also, I was not speaking of what I thought was right. I never said that I thought one ought to donate business proceeds to charity, or to profit share. I merely said that such a belief is not incompatible with libertarianism, as long as one does not force others to do the same.

Ah, I misunderstood. True, true.

I could only imagine what your family reunions must be like. :)
