Guess we won't be seeing grandpa at Christmas :(. I think Shannon & I now have 1 grandparent left between us.
Let me repeat the plea I made the last time I lost a relative:
Let me repeat the plea I made the last time I lost a relative:
The science of life extension has still not found any fountains of eternal youth, and it can do little to truly reverse the aging process. But it has certainly found ways to slow the body's decay and increase the quality of life. It takes some work to sort the snake oil from the fish oil, but aren't the benefits of a longer, healthier life worth that effort? I urge those of you with relatives who are elderly but not decrepit (say 50-70) to help/encourage them to look into this field. Here and here are introductions to anti-aging. The Life Extension Foundation is an excellent resource, and a membership might be a good way to get a relative started. It has been said that the two inevitabilities in life are death and taxes. Many of you still have hope of eliminating the latter - let's not forget the former too.

And I totally agree that defeating death would be wonderful and isn't beyond the bounds of possibility.
I believe that physical immortality is inevitable. I just wish it would hurry up and arrive.
Condolences for your loss. My grandfather died recently, and even when you rationally know it's coming, with age being the primary factor, that doesn't make it easier.
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Echoing your comments above, when Heinlein died I remember your dad commenting something to the effect of, "I’d hoped he would be around long enough to see the life-extension he predicted." Except your dad said it much more eloquently than that. Optimism, as well as eloquence, appear to be genetic traits in your family. I imagine your grandfather was proud of you, and very happy to have made acquaintance with his great-grandson.
Many condolences, sorry to hear of your/your family's loss.

He had a truly GREAT run -- a life for the ages. We should all aspire to accomplish even a fraction as much, and to exhibit a small portion of the integrity (and gentle grace under pressure) that Milton Friedman embodied.
Your grandfather was a truly great man and a true hero.
Your grandfather was a truly great man and a true hero for the world.
