Guess we won't be seeing grandpa at Christmas :(. I think Shannon & I now have 1 grandparent left between us.

Let me repeat the plea I made the last time I lost a relative:
The science of life extension has still not found any fountains of eternal youth, and it can do little to truly reverse the aging process. But it has certainly found ways to slow the body's decay and increase the quality of life. It takes some work to sort the snake oil from the fish oil, but aren't the benefits of a longer, healthier life worth that effort? I urge those of you with relatives who are elderly but not decrepit (say 50-70) to help/encourage them to look into this field. Here and here are introductions to anti-aging. The Life Extension Foundation is an excellent resource, and a membership might be a good way to get a relative started.
It has been said that the two inevitabilities in life are death and taxes. Many of you still have hope of eliminating the latter - let's not forget the former too.

Sent you a private email before I saw this, but I'm sorry to hear it.

And I totally agree that defeating death would be wonderful and isn't beyond the bounds of possibility.

I think this is the first time I've found out that a friend's relative has died from reading CNN.com. My condolences to you and your family on your loss.

Saw the news over at reason. Sorry to hear it. Your grandfather lived one hell of an amazing life.

I believe that physical immortality is inevitable. I just wish it would hurry up and arrive.

So sorry patrissimo. I would think it a little alienating, millions of people commenting on our loss of such a great man --- but for you it's personal.

I saw that headline and immediately thought of you and your family, of course.

Condolences for your loss. My grandfather died recently, and even when you rationally know it's coming, with age being the primary factor, that doesn't make it easier.

My sympathies, Patri. Out of curiosity, did you ever broach cryonics with him? If so, how did he respond?

I haven't, but my dad probably has.

Patri,

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. Echoing your comments above, when Heinlein died I remember your dad commenting something to the effect of, "I’d hoped he would be around long enough to see the life-extension he predicted." Except your dad said it much more eloquently than that. Optimism, as well as eloquence, appear to be genetic traits in your family. I imagine your grandfather was proud of you, and very happy to have made acquaintance with his great-grandson.

I'm sorry to hear this news. I hope you take comfort in the fact that the articles I read this morning made him out to be a great man. You seem lucky to have him as an influence in your life.

A great life
My condolences as well on this sad day.

He had a truly GREAT run -- a life for the ages. We should all aspire to accomplish even a fraction as much, and to exhibit a small portion of the integrity (and gentle grace under pressure) that Milton Friedman embodied.

Our Condolences
Please accept our most sincere condolences, Patri. It's a little bit uncanny, but I was actually just thinking about how cool it must be for Tovar to have a Nobel prize winning great-grandfather.

I hope you guys are doing well.

Take care,
April Buchheit
