I wish to see this movie. Sometime in the next couple weeks. I don't have it. Someone who has it, suggest a time and a place. I might be able to host.

conference

it was great. Lots of cool people - surprisingly little of the crazy vibe. Instead there was lots of the interesting people vibe - everyone had "stories to tell". I dumped a lot of knowledge and I got some in return.

Some moments I loved:

[info]adam__selene said "I started out skeptical, and Patri's opening speech got me excited." I was happy, because a) my speech convinced him, and b) he came up to the conference from Costa Rica even though he was skeptical!

Eelco pointing out that we had business ideas of "Sin City - drugs" and "Rehab / Detox retreat center", and we could just shuttle people back and forth forever :).

The Forbes Island dinner tonight was totally awesome, although sadly it was really expensive, especially with the wine. Next time - hip flasks!

I'm pretty sure this conference will help us take steps forward along the major paths we need to get to seasteading.

I had some great conversations with people that were very focused on getting things done. Really accomplishing things, even little things, rather than just dreaming. Maybe it takes years or decades of little steps. That's fine, it's a big dream. But little steps are way, way better than nothing.

We had people fly in from Costa Rica, Anguilla, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Russia, Canada, and the east coast. For our first conference! So awesome.

Anyway, I'm worn out, and lots of follow-up to do. But it was a great group and we had a great time.

fun in SF

we had planned kayaking in Sausalito and then dinner at forbes island, but kayaking was canceled due to wind, so many of us wandered the city instead. It was a gorgeous day, and the blue angels were flying, so it was a great afternoon to wander the city.

My favorite moment was a Marine pullup competiion, where I did 17 static continuous pullups (chin above bar to full hang, no kip) to win a water bottle, which was the second highest prize. The record for the day was 23, so I'm pretty proud of 17. Next year!

Also it was great to get in so much walking and standing, given that I hadn't worked out since Monday due to conference business.

I'm really psyched about seasteading, I feel like we have a good group of people who are in this for the long haul, are about action not just talking, are incremental thinkers, but also see the big vision we are headed towards. It will probably be 10 years or more before we have an independent deep ocean community, but as long as we keep taking little steps in that direction, we will eventually be able to look back and realize that big things have happened.

free standing handstand pushup

I just met a 10+ year fitness goal! I did my first free standing HSPU where I maintained balance and didn't fall down afterwards. I've wanted to do this for quite a long time.

It's been really neat how my handstand balance has improved after short and occasional practices. Some serious muscle learning during recovery happening!

I did it in the park outside the discovery museum, where we've been playing after it closes at 5pm.

At 8 a.m. ET Monday morning, Neel Kashkari, appointed last week to oversee the United States' $700 billion bailout program and the newly created Office of Financial Stability, will make his first public speech. Kashkari, a former executive at Goldman Sachs, is expected to offer details about how the U.S. bailout will be implemented.
(story)

The Department of Defense wages war. The Department of Homeland Security hassles travelers. The Department of Agriculture makes food more expensive.

I shudder to think what the real effect the Office of Financial Stability will be.
